Vindication Over Abuse Of School Election

Last year, we advised private schools against the excesses of the process of electing school prefects. It was so abused that parents engaged in undue 'show of wealth' in the name of campaign for their children who were candidates seeking votes for elective posts. Parents spent recklessly on unimportant things like gift items for staff and students, so that own child would win. The exercise became so corrupting, distractive, tempting... to all that we frowned at it. We suggested that schools should either stop or regulate the conduct of campaign. A number of parents and schools were displeased- can't list them.

Recently, we received a report from a school that had its finger burnt due to the excesses which occasioned unhealthy rivalry and conspiracy. The school's image was not spared.

Now, moderation & regulation are the school's watchwords for parents. Staff also received stern warning not to ever let any parents repeat or make an abusive attempt.

Career Mistakes Teachers Make

Teachers are a people with so much potentials & opportuinities than they actually accord themselves. But in this new year, it could be better if you develop and apply good strategies but before applying strategies, it's helpful to identify the #CareerMistakesTeachersMake so each Teacher can develop own antidote.

First mistake is that most Teachers focus only on money. Money is good but is not everything. There are many things money cannot buy. An example is hapiness. if a teacher bases his hapiness only on money, then such would experience discouragement,/depression when he's diappointed due to small amount of money earned. so focus NOT only on money. begin to train yourself to perceive other non-monetary (actual & latent) blessings you've got around you.

Second mistake is career network. Remember your network is your networth. that you are in a physically enclosed school shouldn't make you to close your own 'door' to helpful people. so, make RESOURCEFUL friends physically & via social media. if you check your friend-list now, are they really resourceful?

The third #CareerMistakesTeachersMake is lack of knowledge. Acquiring professional knowledge is the least thing most teachers would ever do. i'm aware that poor salary is a key factor but what about the informal education opportunities available online? update your knowledge & consequently acquire more skills. thus you would attract promotion to yourself. Do you say "i've done all these but nothing yet as a reward. then, read the no.4 mistake.

The fourth #CareerMistake is Patience & Prayer. promotion lasts only when God is the foundation. And to get enduring miracle from God, you need patience. you also should add prayer to activate and fire up the expected promotion. God works in diverse ways.so, don't be rigid as to where & when your promotion comes.

Lagos:Renovation, Better Security For Schools

Following the increase in kidnapping cases in the state, the Governor has assured Parents of the safety of their children throughout the state. The Governor, who was represented by his deputy,  Dr.Idiat Adebule made the statement during the inauguration of  the construction of 10 modern schools in the five districts in the state. 
She disclosed that the new schools will consist of 12 laboratories, multi-purpose hall, sports field, staff rooms and car park.

In the same vein, the administration stated it has awarded contract for the construction of  eight new blocks of classrooms, the renovation of 174 existing classrooms and the construction of perimeter fence in various schools to enhance security.

Ogun: Free Meal Scheme For Pupils Begins

The free School feeding programme of the federal government was kicked off yesterday, Monday in Abeokuta by the Deputy Governor, Yetunde Onanuga. She stated that the implementation will be carried out in phases and that beneficiaries at first will be pupils in classes 1-3.

The scheme, tagged the Ogun Home Grown School Feeding Programme, in its first phase will commence simultaneously in 874 schools in the state. According to her,  1,381 out of the selected  2,968 food vendors who were enrolled and trained would commence operation immediately.

CRISIS: TROOPS WOO STUDENTS BACK TO SCHOOLS

Following the incessant attack by Fulani herdsmen in the troubled parts of Plateau and Southern Kaduna states, the military troops code-named Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) mobilised Pupils and Students in the areas with gift items- school materials, to make them return to their schools.

The gesture was meant to restore confidence in parents to release their children to go back to their various schools.

The Commander OPSH, Major General Rogers Ibe Nicholas, stated that the gesture has become necessary as the fear of being attacked by hoodlums has not left the communities, hence students and pupils are yet to return to school. He further assured them that security of lives in the areas has been boosted with the presence of security operatives deployed to the areas.

Borno: New School For Displaced Kids

Collaboration between the Borno state government and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), has created  a temporary learning centre where not less than 4,000 children now receive education in Borno state.

The displaced children, aged between 3 and 15 years, who hail from  Mafa and Jere local government areas of the state were forced to abandon their studies in the past six years  by the Boko Haram insurgency. The apparently enthusiastic children were found reciting the English letters and alphabets at their newly opened IDPs camp schools located in Muna Custom area at the outskirts of Maiduguri in Borno state.

Speaking on the situation, Lawan Sale, the education secretary of Mafa local government and one of the local education secretaries in charge of managing the schools, said 'giving the kids a space to learn comes as a huge relief.'

 His counterpart, Chester Shaba, an Education Specialist for UNICEF at the Maiduguri field office commented that ' the idea about UNICEF collaborating with the state government to provide temporary learning space for the kids was like an afterthought.Initially we did not consider it necessary because the children are in the camp on temporary bases... but now that we see that they will be here for a long time, they need to be provided with all their rights; and one of their basic rights is the right to education.We anticipate registering over 4000 children; right now, in just two days, we have reached a target of over 2, 000 children.'
